Quillaja saponins are naturally occurring compounds extracted from the bark of Quillaja saponaria (soapbark tree). Certain purified saponins, particularly QS-21, are well known vaccine adjuvants.
They can stimulate both:
- Humoral immunity → antibody responses
- Cell-mediated immunity → particularly useful when strong T-cell responses are desired
What does “nanoparticle Quillaja adjuvant” mean?
Instead of administering the saponin as a conventional soluble formulation, the Quillaja-derived components can be incorporated into or associated with nanoparticle structures.
A well-known example is ISCOM/ISCOMATRIX-type technology, where saponin, cholesterol, phospholipids and antigen can form highly organized particulate structures.
